I’m adding photography as a studio service. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for quite a while now.

I’ve dabbled in photography here and there for about eight years but never got too serious about it. Of course I’ve always had access to polaroids; point and shoots; a couple of older medium format cameras; and I even went out and purchased a nice 35mm SLR and a few lenses at one point, but none of it lead to a serious study of the capture of light.

Lately however, it seems that more and more of my clients are needing specific art that stock art options just can’t fill – which is a great reason for me to pick the camera back up and learn about being a shutterbug!

Another event also turned me back on to photography as well… From time to time, I help a close friend of mine host art shows in the downtown area. At last month’s show, we had Atlanta photographer Darren Austin’s work on display - as well as paintings from Atlanta artist Michael Jones (sorry Mike, I can’t remember your website address). I’ll be honest - I’ve never really been one to appreciate “photography as art,” and it may very well be because I’ve never seen great photographic art…

Something about Darren’s work though has really inspired me learn more about photography. I enjoy learning to think in new ways as well forcing myself into seeing the world from a new perspective. I’m really stoked about branching out into this artform as well as seeing how I can use this service on future client projects. I’d considered just upgrading some parts of my 35mm SLR, but then reconsidered as the advantages of going digital are just too great for my line of work…

So in the great male tradition of going overboard with gadgets, I’ve orderd a Nikon D70s, four lenses, a teleconverter, a Speedlight flash, a slew of filters, a tripod, battery grip, enough batteries to power a small community for a week, enough lens cleaning supplies to make Mr. Clean jealous, a host of books and field guides that should keep me reading for weeks before actually getting to shoot a picture, a Lowpro camera bag, 4 gigs of memory cards, an iPod (to store the pictures on when the cards fill up of course), and now I’m debating on one of those sweet little MacBook Pros to take with me out in the field…

Decisions decisions….
